Project Nim (2011): Summary

From the Oscar-winning team behind MAN ON WIRE comes the story of Nim, the chimpanzee who in the 1970s became the focus of a landmark experiment which aimed to show that an ape could learn to communicate with language if raised and nurtured like a human child. Following Nim's extraordinary journey through human society, and the enduring impact he makes on the people he meets along the way, the film is an unflinching and unsentimental biography of an animal we tried to make human. What we learn about his true nature - and indeed our own - is comic, revealing and profoundly unsettling.The scientific project really resulted in being inhumane for the chimp because despite making some progress he never really adapted well when he was taken back with the rest of the chimps. He had been raised as a human for so long that after the project ended, Nim continued suffering the exploitations he went through. There were many people who helped Nim and really cared for him, but at the same time the entire experiment resulted in being a negative thing for the chimp. Project Nim never tries to be preachy or tell us what to do, it simply points out the facts. Marsh interviews everyone that was a part of Nim's life and shows a lot of footage that was used during the investigation. The documentary is really interesting on paper, but I really felt it dragged for some while and wasn't as entertaining as other recent documentaries. Marsh is a great director and he has great ideas, but I don't think this film really deserves an Oscar nomination. It's still a good film and if you're interested in animal behavior you might enjoy this a little more than I did. I'm more into sports and preferred the Uruguayan documentary Manyas much more, which dealt with the soccer fanatics and the way they felt for their team.

Project Nim (2011): Plot

I thought wouldn't it be exciting to communicate with a chimp and find out what it was thinking.¨ Director James Marsh won an Oscar for his brilliant documentary, Man on Wire, which told the story of French tightrope walker Phillippe Petit who performed his routine across the Twin Towers in New York City. That film was very suspenseful and really hooked my attention. Project Nim, is also directed by Marsh, but it doesn't have the same suspense that that film had. Man on Wire kept me interested in how Petit was able to achieve his goal, he was a very charismatic figure, and on the other hand Project Nim was kind of slow paced and didn't have any interesting characters rather than the Chimp himself. Nim (the name of the chimp) is fun to watch on screen, but it didn't work as a full length documentary for me. The story does raise several questions about how inhumane we can be at times and how our ¨scientific projects¨ have interfered in many animals lives. Questions which I already was familiar with, so this movie really didn't surprise me one bit, like say The Cove did with the slaughtering of the dolphins in Japan. That was a much more effective and eye-opening documentary. Project Nim is a well made documentary, but it really falls short compared to last year's great ones such as Inside Job, Restrepo, and Exit Through the Gift Shop. I haven't been able to watch many documentaries this year, but I heard this was on many critics' favorite lists so I went ahead and checked it out, but felt a bit disappointed with it. The bar has already been raised high for these movies (and Marsh himself is responsible for this after his excellent Man on Wire) so I really can't recommend this one as highly as I would've like too.

Hebert Terrace was a professor at Columbia University during the 70's when he came up with the idea of trying to teach a chimpanzee how to communicate like a human being. Considering human and chimp DNA is very similar he believed that it could be possible for a chimp to communicate what he was thinking if he was raised in a normal human environment. So Terrace chose a newborn chimp, separated it from his mother, named it Nim, and gave him to a human family which would be in charge of nurturing and taking care of it as if it were a normal human being. Terrace chose Stephanie Lafarge and her family to raise the animal. It was the seventies, the hippy movement, and her family was pretty much very liberal. They had no idea of how to raise the chimp and they practically let it run around everywhere. The monkey spend the first years with that family, until Terrace decided to move him to a bigger home with more experienced professors who could teach Nim how to communicate better. Nim learned several sign languages and was taught at first by Laura-Ann Petitto, but as the chimp grew up he became more dangerous. He never lost his animals instincts although he did make some progress in communication. After five years Terrace decided to end the project as he felt the research wasn't going anywhere, and Nim was sent back to a chimp refugee where he spent most of the time locked up in cages although he felt most attached to Bob Ingersoll who continued the communication process with the animal and spent time playing with it in the wild. The documentary continues to track Nim's life until his death.

Marwencol (2010): Summary

"Marwencol" is a documentary about the fantasy world of Mark Hogancamp. After being beaten into a brain-damaging coma by five men outside a bar, Mark builds a 1/6th scale World War II-era town in his backyard. Mark populates the town he dubs "Marwencol" with dolls representing his friends and family and creates life-like photographs detailing the town's many relationships and dramas. Playing in the town and photographing the action helps Mark to recover his hand-eye coordination and deal with the psychic wounds of the attack. When Mark and his photographs are discovered, a prestigious New York gallery sets up an art show. Suddenly Mark's homemade therapy is deemed "art", forcing him to choose between the safety of his fantasy life in Marwencol and the real world that he's avoided since the attack. but the way he connects with these people and incorporates them into his model village is really special. He may have some trouble interacting with the real version of the doll's inspirations, but when he talks to the dolls resembled after his friends and co-workers, he has a bond with them and he respects them and even in a way loves them in the same way as human beings we would love each other. The artistic aspect of Mark's town is also here. Everything is so detailed and well done that this film is interesting to look at in an artistic way as well. Also to look at Mark's imagination and how he sets up the characters in the town and involves them in story lines and plots that he will remember for weeks, or months after they happen, is nothing short of phenomenal. In a sense we do feel bad for Mark because of the accident and what he had to go through, but in another way we also see how the accident may have saved his life from the destructive behaviour and alcohol dependency he was so relying on before and through this village he has created, it has helped him in so many ways to reach out in a sense to others and himself. It was almost like he was given a second chance at life and I think he feels that way himself and he is going to make the most of it. Marwencol is so fascinating because we like Mark, care and want the best for him as do we for his town as well. Seeing him interact with it and how by doing this he is really helping himself and at the same time opening up a whole new world of opportunities for him. In a sense this is a feel good film because we see the progress that he is making and it would be interesting to see a follow up film several years down the road to further see what he is up to because I know he is going to get better and stronger with time and his art is going to be more and more appreciated. This film works because it is so human and believable and really concerns you and makes you want to cheer for what you have just seen.

Marwencol (2010): Plot

Marwencol is a documentary about Mark Hogancamp, who is a man in his late 30's and one night at a bar he was ganged up on and brutally beaten by a group of people. Mark survived, but was brain damaged and had to learn his motor skills, speech and everything else that he once knew, all over again. Instead of going to expensive therapy sessions, or psychiatry to get over the incident, Mark creates his own therapy and uses his creative outlet by building a model town circa World War 2 in his backyard with old scrap pieces and dolls and other material he buys at the local hobby shop. The film explores Mark's past and what he can remember about it before the accident and also shows how much this miniature town means to him and that this is probably the healthiest and best way for him to cope and get over the traumatic events that he experienced. I really enjoy when a documentary filmmaker does a film about everyday issues such as politics, the environment, or social causes that need light to be shed upon them to make a difference in the world. I also really appreciate when a documentary filmmaker makes a film like Marwencol, and instead of being really high tech, or using a lot of jargonised language and statistics, it instead invites us into the world of it's subject and in a sense, lets us the viewer get up close and personal with them. Marwencol, does not look like it was an expensive film to make and it does not have the fancy camera tricks, or stunts as say a Michael Moore documentary, but it is just as fascinating and affective as any other documentary on the market. The thing about this film is how we really start to like and care about Mark, as an individual and we also really respect and are fascinated by his World War 2 model town. Seeing him taking pictures of it, building onto it and all the precise and accurate measures he goes to, to make it all perfect is fascinating to watch and also at the same time warms our hearts because we see how much this means to him and how important it is for his creative outlet as well as his way of letting go of all his anger and fears that were brought on because of the attack. We see Mark, as he tries to interact with others and naturally he is very cautious and a little afraid to do so now for obvious reasons,
