Little White Lies (2010): Summary

In 2006, the actor Guillaume Canet scored a big hit with his debut feature as a director, Tell No One, a high concept thriller based on Harlan Coben's novel. I wasn’t as fond of Tell No One as many people seemed to be, but the movie was a model of efficiency compared to Canet’s latest effort, Little White Lies (Les petits mouchoirs), a painfully inept re-lay-shun-ship drama that focuses on a fraught summer vacation undertaken by a group of thirtysomething pals. The holiday, spent at the property of Max (Tell No One’s Francois Cluzet, miscast, and giving an atypically forced and unconvincing performance here), is a yearly ritual for the group - and they’re not dissuaded from it by the fact that, this year, one of their number, Ludo (Jean Dujardin, pre-Artist eminence) is languishing in hospital following a serious motorbike accident. Over the course of the summer, tensions surface and relationships get reassessed as the deceptions and half-truths upon which the group's friendship is based are gradually revealed.Mostly, in his approach to the scenes, Canet seems to be going for free-wheeling spontaneity of the Christophe Honoré variety in Little White Lies. But his work as both writer and director here exudes insecurity. The interactions feel mostly fake, the relationships underwritten, and the script keeps resorting to contrived dilemmas. Will Marion Cottilard’s sad-eyed rebel Marie abandon her promiscuous ways and find the “courage” to commit? Will Eric (Gilles Lellouche) and Antoine (Laurent Lafitte) succeed in winning back their partners? Will married osteopath Vincent (Benoit Magimal) regret confessing his man-crush on his (increasingly unhinged) host? And, most pressingly, will Canet stop using montages scored to an entirely random selection of songs to fill up the movie? (Spoiler: he doesn't.

Little White Lies (2010): Plot

There are scattered effective moments, the best of which is a poignant - if familiar - sequence that captures the group watching home movie footage of Ludo. But by the time Canet starts hammering home moral platitudes (delivered in the form of a minor character’s self-righteous admonishment to the friends for their selfishness) the movie has lost any good-will that you may have had towards it, while its glutinous finale earns not a jot of honest emotion. And never has a soundtrack so full of great songs  - The Band’s “The Weight,” Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Fortunate Son,” Antony and the Johnson’s “Fistful of Love,” Nina Simone’s version of “My Way” - made me cringe as much as this one: Canet employs the tracks so randomly and indiscriminately that it sounds like his iPod got stuck on shuffle. Is Canet doing it his way - or just any old way? On the evidence of Little White Lies, it would appear to be the latter.

This was pure crap. Only reason I watched it was because I am a action movie fan, and because it has famous actors (who usually act very well.) The camera quality was horrible, the CGI was horrible, acting was horrible, and worst of all, I didn't even understand what the film was even about. I can't believe I spent 1 hour and 30 minutes to watch this, just to find out that the movie had no meaning at all. Only reason I even got on here, was to warn you not to use money on this bullshit. I didn't even want to give this a 1, if a -10 rating had existed on IMDb, I would be happy to rate it that. This is a lousy wannabe action flick which is not even worth taking a look at. I would only watch this again if someone paid me for it. If you ever should come across this film anywhere, just remember that I warned you.

Check out a trailer, poster, and images from the actioner below, people who enjoy checking out assets from upcoming action movies. So the killer is a woman. I hope that’s not some kind of surprise in the movie cause, well, it’s all over the trailer, isn’t it? When an unknown vigilante begins killing high-priority terrorists from America’s Most Wanted list in Europe, a former FBI field agent (Christian Slater) is brought in by the Us Ambassador (Donald Sutherland) to discover the identity of the assassin.

The defense and the prosecution have rested and the jury is filing into the jury room to decide if a young Spanish-American is guilty or innocent of murdering his father. What begins as an open and shut case of murder soon becomes a mini-drama of each of the jurors' prejudices and preconceptions about the trial, the accused, and each other. Based on the play, all of the action takes place on the stage of the jury room.

12 Angry Men (1957): Summary

This film deserves to be on anyone's list of top films. My problem is that it is so perfect, so seamlessly polished, it is hard to appreciate the individual excellences.

The acting is top notch. I believe that monologue acting is quite a bit simpler than real reactive ensemble acting. Most of what we see today is monologues pretending to be conversations. But in this film, we have utter mastery of throwing emotions. Once the air becomes filled with human essence, it is hard to not get soaked ourselves as the camera moves through the thick atmosphere. Yes, there are slight differences in how each actor projects (Fonda internally, Balsam completely on his skin...) but the ensemble presents one vision to the audience.

The writing is snappy too. You can tell it was worked and worked and worried, going through several generations. It is easy to be mesmerized by this writing and acting, and miss the rare accomplishment of the camera-work. This camera is so fluid, you forget you are in one room. It moves from being a human observer, to being omniscient, to being a target. It is smart enough to seldom center on the element of most importance, so expands the field to all men.

12 Angry Men (1957): Plot

Eddie Taylor (Henry Fonda) leaves his third stretch in prison and walks straight into the arms of his wife to be, Joan (Sylvia Sidney). He vows to leave his criminal ways behind him and make a new life with Joan, but it proves hard to go straight. No-one trusts him and when he appears to have become involved in a deadly bank job, no-one will believe in his innocence (apart from the doting Joan). Eventually they go on the run together, but the odds seem stacked against them.

Director Fritz Lang has a nigh-on peerless resumé. Metropolis, M, The Big Heat, Scarlet Street and this, only his second film made following his move to Hollywood from an increasingly problematic 1930's National Socialist-dominated Germany. Film Noir, Expressionism and big themes of determinism, human nature and destiny – all seemlessly woven through his oeuvre and all very much present in this excellent crime drama. This week's Clip joint is by Emily Cleaver. More than any other medium, film has the power to scare us silly. In the dark of the cinema, the suspense of a slow pan, that shadowy figure at the edge of frame – the shock of a sudden sound-effect, or jittery jump-cut – all come together in delicious, breath-stopping, heartbeat-skipping moments of pure cinematic fear. But forget chainsaws, zombies or psychos. The best scares in cinema are the ghosts that don't rely on gore to frighten. Subtly terrifying, flesh-creepingly sinister or horribly uncanny, here's a roll-call of the most memorable, best-realised apparitions on film.

The action now takes place miles away from the original location and partly in broad daylight, giving the film an entirely fresh yet disturbing new reality. The infection has left the building. In a clever twist that draws together the plots of the first two movies, this third part of the saga also works as a decoder to uncover information hidden in the first two films and leaves the door open for the final installment, the future '[REC] 4 Apocalypse.'

[REC]³ Génesis (2012): Summary

A film that took 5 years to make and co-ordinate. Shot in Panarama 70mm, across 26 countries, needing major government and regulatory clearances, having to wait for certain seasons or lunar phases to get the light to hit the way director Fricke wanted...carefully strung together with a massive 7.1 surround sound design and music score from Michael Stearns, Marcello de Francisci, and Lisa Gerrard (of Dead Can Dance).

The 70mm negative has been digitally scanned and oversampled at 8k resolution (much like the 'Baraka' Blu-ray); the TIFF Lightbox theatre installed a brand new Christie 4k projector (Christie Projection Systems rushed the projector before its release to the market specifically for this event) making it the first true 4k screening of it's kind.

[REC]³ Génesis (2012): Plot

Acting is good,From sweeping landscapes to time-lapse sequences of the night sky and from exclusive looks into the processing of food to the consumption and effects it has on the human body, Samsara is nothing short of astounding. Modern technology, production lines, and human robotics are juxtaposed against a backdrop of deserts, garbage mounds as far as the eye can see, and traffic congestion in modern centres. The time-lapse footage is simply transcendent. In fact, I caught myself questioning the reality of some of the landscape vistas and night skyline montages...they looked so hyper-real that I thought they must have come from a CG lab somewhere. Simply astonishing. The richness, depth and clarity of colour and image achieved within the processes utilized gives birth to the most beautiful visual meditation that I have ever witnessed.

As one film journalist noted, "That Samsara is instantly one of the most visually-stunning films in the history of cinema is reason enough to cherish it, but Fricke and co-editor Mark Magidson achieve truly profound juxtapositions, brimming with meaning and emotion. It sounds preposterous, but it's true: In 99 minutes, Samsara achieves something approaching a comprehensive portrait of the totality of human experience. If you're even remotely fond of being alive, Samsara is not to be missed."

Director: Norman Buckley

Writer: Teena Booth (script by)

Stars: Alexa Vega, Walter Perez and Peter Benson | See full cast and crew

The Pregnancy Project (2012): Summary

The Pregnancy Project follows Gaby, a senior in high school who has straight A's and is without a doubt headed for college. Gaby comes from a family of teen pregnancy, her sister Sonya having a kid at the age Gaby is now. For her senior project Gaby decides to fake being pregnant, only letting her boyfriend, her mom, and few others in on her secret. But what starts out as an understanding of statistics turns into an social experiment about stereotyping that opens Gaby to a entirely different world.

The film is based off a book and the real life experience of its main character Gaby Rodriguez. Like from any point of view of a teenager there's a lot of fresh insight but also a bit of naivety. Gaby is ignorant to the fact that having a baby is a naturally hard job, stereotype or not, and it's not with you for only eighteen years as you are a parent the rest of your life. But her message triumphs her ignorance as she's able to make it clear. No one gives Gaby a chance the second they find out she's pregnant, as soon as it's out to everyone else her life is over. No college, 'get in line for welfare', are among the expectations for her. Though she's 'pregnant' Gaby hasn't changed, she's still the smart girl who wants to go to college, but no one else sees it.

The Pregnancy Project (2012): Plot
Acting is good, Alexa Vegas is convincing as Gaby, she's able to turn her emotions on whim for the odd hormonal toll Gaby went through. Judy Reyers is also good as her mother who supports her throughout the process, but also reminds her that Gaby is only experiencing things at surface value. The rest of cast is in general background noise, having either negative reactions to the pregnancy or those who support her. The cinematography for the film is quite good for what I expect of a Lifetime film, but from the message boards I heard it didn't quite capture the true spirit of the school and town Gaby is from.

The Pregnancy Project is not about teen pregnancy, its a reflection on how we as society see people and how we too often pass judgment. The film like another of its kind, Juno, will warrant a lot of negativity as it doesn't portray teen pregnancy in that nature we tend to expect (i.e. crying mothers, abandoning boyfriends, college dropouts), in other words it doesn't confine to the stereotype. In that I think the film speaks for itself.
